A Royal Australian Air Force member had his leg severed when he was hit by a piece of machinery on the runway at Townsville Airport.

A Royal Australian Air Force member's leg was severed in an accident at a north Queensland airport.

The 56-year-old man was on duty at the RAAF Base at Townsville Airport.

He was working on the runway on Wednesday night when he was hit by a piece of machinery.

Members of the Air Force applied immediate first-aid prior to Queensland Ambulance Service arriving.

He was taken to Townsville Hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries.

A Defence spokesperson said the Air Force is providing support to the member, their family and colleagues.

The Defence department will work with Federal workers compensation authority Comcare to investigate the incident.
