Manuka set for summer's only Test sell out

Canberra's Manuka Oval could become the first venue to sell out for a day of Test cricket this summer when Australia plays Sri Lanka.

Canberra's first two days of Test cricket will go close to being the first sold out days of the Test summer with ticket sales tracking well for Friday's clash with Sri Lanka.

Manuka Oval will become just the 11th Test venue in Australia this weekend, following 12 years of lobbying from Cricket ACT to host a match in the nation's capital.

The capacity of around 12,000 people will almost certainly be challenged on Saturday with the vast majority of tickets sold, while numbers were also healthy for day one and day three by late last week.

Cricket Australia is yet to sell out a day of Test cricket this summer, but the objective is naturally far easier in Canberra given the smaller ground and natural excitement over the city's biggest match.

"There's been a lot of people who have put a lot of blood sweat and tears to try and get a Test match," Cricket ACT chief executive James Allsopp told AAP.

"We'd love to host a Test every summer but the reality is that's not going to happen.

"All we can control is that the Test next week is really iconic and a really special occasion that is a great representation Canberra and regional cricket then we can get as much internationals as possible in the future."

Grade cricket has been called off in Canberra on Saturday to ensure access to the Test for local players.

The sales also means crowds will likely trump recent figures at Hobart, Canberra's biggest competitor when Australia hosts a six-Test summer.

However the wait for either venue's next Test could be lengthy, with no such summers scheduled on the Future Tours Program in the next four years.
