A decade ago, the Sydneysider was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and had a large tumor removed.
Her desire to use fitness as a tool to recover led her to joining the Coogee Surf Life Saving Club as a volunteer.
Her passion for fitness became stronger when she discovered running, and took it to the next level by competing in a 4km charity run.
She has since completed several international marathons and fun runs.
This passion would take her and her family around the world.
"By going through ovarian cancer it certainly has changed my whole outlook on life. I came out of that experience thankful to be alive" she told SBS World News.
"The great thing is that they've (family) been on this journey with me.
"They were there the very first day when I put on the runners for the first time, to do that 4km fun run."
She completed the World Marathon Challenge, which took her to seven continents in seven days, and also took part in the Great Himlayan Trail over 1750 kilometres.

Two years ago she won the women's category in the North Pole Marathon, beating around 30 men to the finish line.
Her husband Doug, and two children, have played their part in making it all possible.
"What her mind and what her heart can get her to do is absoultely incredible," her husband said.
Next month, Heather is heading to Thailand to teach 100 would-be Surf Life Savers survival skills.
Whatever goals she sets herself, she'll do it with the trademark smile.
