Marathoner Fien banned for nine months

Australian long-distance runner Cassie Fien has been banned for nine months after testing positive to a banned substance.

Australian marathon runner Cassie Fien has accepted a nine-month ban and waived her right to a hearing after testing positive to a banned substance.

In an out-of-competition test in April 2017, Fien tested positive to Higenamine.

In a media release, the Australian Sports Anti-Doping Authority (ASADA) said Higenamine was increasingly being found in dietary supplements, although it was often listed under different names.

The sanction was backdated to August 9, 2017 and will conclude on May 9 this year.

The ban was imposed by Athletics Australia.

"Although athletes are solely responsible for all substances in their bodies, Ms Fien's sanction was reduced to nine months on the basis of her degree of fault and the fact that the supplement, 'Liporush', was a contaminated product," ASADA said.

Fien, 32,has represented Australia three times at the world half-marathon championships.

She has also recorded top-12 finishes at the 2015 New York marathon and 2016 Berlin marathon.

Fien's fastest marathon time of two hours 33 minutes and one second was set in Osaka in January 2017.
