The twin brother of NSW school teacher Stephanie Scott's killer has hidden in the back of his mother's car after being freed from prison.

Marcus Stanford, 25, was released on Friday morning after serving 15 months for disposing of evidence linking his brother to the Leeton bride-to-be's murder.

Stanford cowered in the back of his mother's silver 4WD as she sped past a media pack waiting outside the gates of Junee Correctional Centre in the state's Riverina district just after 9am.

It is unclear where the pair will go following his release, however there is speculation he may leave the state.

Stanford's mother still lives in Leeton, but many of the town's 11,000 residents have made it known he is no longer welcome in their tight-knit community.

The 25-year-old served his full, fixed-term sentence and will not be placed under any restrictions or community corrections orders.

Almost 60,000 people signed an online petition calling for his sentence to be appealed, describing the punishment as "pathetic" and an "horrendous blow".

However, the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions Lloyd Babb SC last week announced he would not be appealing Stanford's sentence after Premier Mike Baird asked him to review the case.

Mr Babb said he believed there were "no reasonable prospects of success against the inadequacy of the sentence".

Stanford's twin brother, Vincent Stanford, attacked Ms Scott at Leeton High School on Easter Sunday 2015, days before she was due to marry her childhood sweetheart.

The 26-year-old teacher was dragged to a store room, sexually assaulted and stabbed in the neck.

The murderer removed Ms Scott's engagement ring given to her by fiance Aaron Leeson-Woolley, and a graduation ring from her mother, and sent them with her driver's licence in an envelope to his brother's Adelaide address.

Marcus Stanford then sold the rings for $705 at an Adelaide jewellery store and burned the driver's licence.

Vincent Stanford has admitted raping and murdering Ms Scott and will be sentenced in Griffith next month.
