Allrounder Marcus Stoinis will learn the extent of his untimely shoulder injury later this week, with scan results to dictate whether national selectors are forced into a rethink for the upcoming Champions Trophy.

Competition for spots in Australia's 15-man squad for the ODI tournament was notably fierce, with allrounder James Faulkner the most high-profile omission.

Out-of-favour Faulkner could yet make the trip to England, where the event starts on June 1, if Stoinis' setback proves to be anything more than minor.

Stoinis, who crashed a memorable ODI century against New Zealand earlier this year, rushed home from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after landing awkwardly on his shoulder during a fielding drill.

Mitch Marsh remains sidelined because of a shoulder reconstruction. Hilton Cartwright, set to be contracted by Cricket Australia in 2017/18, and fellow young allrounder Jack Wildermuth are also on the selectors' radar.

Test batsman Peter Handscomb, who has impressed during England's domestic one-day competition, would also be in the mix should Stoinis be ruled out.

Australia's first warm-up game for the Champions Trophy is in London on May 26.

Australian-based players in the squad will depart alongside coach Darren Lehmann next Thursday, while those currently in India will land in London after their respective IPL campaigns end.

The IPL final is on May 21. Steve Smith and David Warner, who captain Pune and Hyderabad in the IPL, headline the list of squad members in the mix for the playoffs.

Stoinis is the only lingering injury concern for Lehmann, who would have enjoyed Chris Lynn's IPL return as much as anyone.

Lynn belted 50 off 22 balls for Kolkata late on Sunday night, proving both form and fitness after a month-long stint on the sidelines caused by yet another shoulder injury.

Lynn has played only one ODI for Australia but was included in their Champions Trophy squad ahead of Handscomb and Usman Khawaja because of his incredible clean striking.

Handscomb posted his maiden one-day ton for Yorkshire on Sunday, while Khawaja has been on drinks duty for Pune throughout the current IPL season.

Injured spearhead Mitchell Starc, who missed the final two Tests of Australia's recent tour of India because of a foot fracture, has resumed bowling and is on track to take part in the Champions Trophy.
