Diva Mariah Carey has found her hero in Australian billionaire James Packer, with the celebrity couple set to marry.

A reliable source has confirmed to AAP the pair will wed, following US reports Packer proposed to the Grammy winner with a ring on Thursday night in her hometown of New York.

The Carey-Packer union will be the third marriage for each.

"We're told that Mariah's new diamond bling comes in at around 35 carats and that no wedding date has been set just yet," E! News said.

Packer secretly rounded up the singer's close friends for a private dinner at Eleven Madison Park to propose, TMZ reported.

The businessman and American pop megastar went public with their romance last June, with Carey later revealing on a US talk show they instantly hit it off after their first meeting in Aspen.

Carey has been married twice, first to music mogul Tommy Mottola in 1993 and then in 2008 to Nick Cannon, the father of her four-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe.

Packer, son of media mogul Kerry Packer, has also been married twice.

He first wed model Jodhi Meares at his home in Bellevue Hill, Sydney in 1999, but the couple split in 2002.

His second wife was model and singer Erica Baxter. The couple married on the French Riviera in 2007 and their union lasted six years. They have three children; seven-year-old Indigo, Jackson, five, and three-year-old Emmanuelle.

Packer and Carey were in Melbourne this month, with the singer entertaining during a New Year's Eve performance at Packer's Crown Casino.

Carey has also shared a number of pictures of the loved-up pair on social media during their whirlwind romance.
