One very brave Sydneysider has chosen a very public way to ask for a woman's hand in marriage on New Year's Eve.

With the city crowded with revellers, he's hired a skywriting aeroplane to attract her attention.

The words "Marry Me Behnoosh" were spread above the city as the crowds watched just before 1pm (AEDT) on Friday.

The city awaits Behnoosh's answer.
