Germany's Tony Martin has won a record-equalling fourth men's time-trial title at the UCI Road World Championships, while Australia's Rohan Dennis failed in his quest for redemption with a six-placed finish.
The 26-year-old was hoping to erase memories of the Rio Olympics, where he was headed for the podium before an aerobar inexplicable broke and forced a bike change that cost him 30 seconds as he ultimately fell eight seconds shy of a medal.
There were no equipment malfunctions on Wednesday in Doha - just oppressive heat, as Dennis finished one minute and 28 seconds behind the winner Martin, who cruised home in a time of 44 minutes, 42.99 seconds for a commanding win.
"Today wasn't my day," Dennis said.
Fellow Australian Luke Durbridge took 18th place.
Meanwhile, Martin matched Swiss ace Fabian Cancellara's achievement of four time-trial world titles with victory in the 40-kilometres test in Doha, Qatar.
The German also won in 2011, 2012 and 2013 and finished second to Sir Bradley Wiggins in 2014.
Olympic champion Cancellara was absent ahead of his imminent retirement, while Belarus' Vasil Kiryienka, the defending champion, finished second in 45mins 28.04secs and Spain's Jonathan Castroviejo was third.
