Princess Mary and Crown Prince Frederik have emerged with their newborn twins for the first time in public.

The Danish royal couple emerged overnight on Saturday (AEDT) at a Copenhagen hospital with their baby boy and baby girl, who have yet to be named.

The Hobart-born Crown Princess gave birth a week ago and reportedly left hospital after their public appearance.

"We have some wonderful photos of them together and they're waiting excitedly at home for them to come," Princess Mary said in front of a throng of wellwishers and media.

The royal family, along with their two other children - Prince Christian, five, and Princess Isabella, three - hope to visit Australia soon.
