A Victorian taxi driver accused of terrifying his passengers by donning a mask and talking of self destruction has been suspended from his job.

The driver allegedly put on a medical mask and gloves, started speaking in another language, and speeding during two separate trips in Melbourne's east last week.

Two passengers reported him to the Taxi Services Commission, who identified and temporarily suspended the driver on Friday.

"The time the investigation takes will depend on many aspects including gathering the required information, assessing the facts and time to allow natural justice," Taxi Services Commission spokesman Jamie Collins said in a statement on Thursday.

"The main point for now is that the driver is off the road."
