Mass arrests in Thai gambling crackdown

Thai police say they have arrested almost 3800 people as part of a gambling crackdown.

Thai police say they have arrested almost 3800 people as part of a crackdown on illegal gambling, which has risen dramatically during the soccer World Cup.

About 1.9 million baht ($A65,000) in cash and 29 million baht in bet tickets were seized by Thai National Police between June 9 and July 3, Nation Multimedia reported on Saturday.

Some 3771 gambling suspects were arrested during the operation, including 236 alleged bookies.

The police have also asked the Information and Communication Technology Ministry to block 1791 gambling websites. So far 1227 websites have been banned.

The kingdom's new military government has launched a campaign against gambling, which is rife throughout the country despite being illegal, along with other perceived vices it says justified its May 22 coup d'etat.
