Mass grave found to west of Mosul

Iraqi security forces have discovered a mass grave to the west of Mosul containing the bodies of more than 100 people.

Zahed al-Jatouni, a Nineveh provincial government official, said the corpses belonged to civilians who were killed by landmine blasts when they were attempting to flee the western area of Iraq's second-largest city. Mosul has been under the control of Islamic State since June 2014.

The Iraqi government, along with allied militias, recently launched a military operation to liberate the neighbourhoods on the western bank of the Tigris river, after retaking the eastern districts at the end of January.
