After overcoming career-threatening concussions, Sione Mata'utia has re-signed with Newcastle for another three NRL seasons.

The 22-year-old began contract negotiations with the Knights last season but they were stalled by a series of head knocks.

He was sidelined for tests and forced to withdraw from Samoa's 2017 Rugby League World Cup campaign but has not missed a game since being cleared to resume in the NRL season opener for Newcastle.

"It was an easy decision to stay," Mata'utia said in a statement on Thursday.

"Everyone can see we are building something very special in Newcastle and I can't wait for the club to continue to grow.

"I'm glad I get to keep riding the wave."

Mata'utia has played 82 games for the Knights since his 2014 NRL debut.

He became the youngest ever Kangaroo when he played three Tests in his rookie season aged 18.
