A Malaysian national was an integral part of a syndicate that rigged Victorian soccer matches and was the "big wig" of the Australian operation, a court has heard.

Segaran "Gerry" Gsubramaniam received instructions from people in Hungary and Malaysia on what the results of Southern Stars soccer matches should be, the Melbourne Magistrates Court heard on Monday.

Gsubramaniam, 45, allegedly passed the information on to the Victorian Premier League team's coach and some players.

One of those instructions was for the team to lose a match 4-0, the court heard.

Victoria Police Detective Acting Sergeant Scott Poynder told the court "on a worldwide scale (Gsubramaniam) is not the big wig, Australian wise he is".
