The son of Australian rock singer Angry Anderson was allegedly beaten to death by a close friend at a park on Sydney's northern beaches, police allege.

Police on Monday afternoon formally charged a 20-year-old man, whom detectives say knew Liam Anderson, with murder.

He was arrested on Sunday morning after emergency services allegedly found him forcefully beating Mr Anderson at Queenscliff.

Mr Anderson, 26, was found with serious head injuries and was treated at the scene, but later died.

It took several officers and the use of pepper spray to restrain the alleged attacker, who was eventually taken to Manly Police Station for questioning.

The 20-year-old was reportedly best friends with Mr Anderson, who regularly posted on social media about his alleged attacker.

He was refused bail to appear at Manly Local Court later on Monday.

A statement on behalf of Angry Anderson, issued on Sunday afternoon, confirmed the death but asked for privacy.

Friends of the 26-year-old have laid flowers and handwritten notes at the scene.
