Mates to take the long road home

Three British mates drove from London to Brisbane in a black cab dubbed Hannah, and are now heading back in the same taxi.

Three British mates are no longer fazed by the thought of a dodgy cabbie taking them home the long way.

Having driven from London to Brisbane in a black cab dubbed Hannah, taxi rides back home will seem blissfully short.

The three will soon head to Sydney where they'll claim a Guinness world record for the longest ever taxi journey.

It's part of an effort to raise funds for the British Red Cross. But, having made it this far, they've decided to keep on going.

A second leg will see them return home, via a coast to coast jaunt across the United States.

Leigh Purnell, Johno Ellison and Paul Archer left London on February 17 and travelled to Australia via Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, China and South Asia.

And after all that, Mr Archer told AAP they were excited about the prospect of continuing. "We got a new sponsor involved who asked us to drive home.

The car will go in a shipping container in Sydney, then we'll send it across to California," he said The travellers are not keen to negotiate Asia again because the roads are so bad.

"We had to repair Hannah on a daily basis," he told AAP.

But Hannah's back in good shape for the homeward trip. The trio raised $15,000 in the three months it took them to reach Australia.
