Australian Marinko Matosevic has reached his fifth ATP quarter-final this year with a straight-sets win over American Tim Smyczek in Atlanta.

Matosevic recovered from deficits in both sets to win 6-4 7-5 and book a showdown with American top seed John Isner.

Isner edged out countryman Robby Ginepri 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 7-5 in his second-round match.

Matosevic's run will likely elevate the Victorian back into the world's top 50 and victory over the 12th-ranked Isner will thrust him into his first ATP semi-final since Memphis in February last year.

In other second-round matches on Thursday, Dutchman Thiemo De Bakker upset South African second seed Kevin Anderson 6-4 7-5 and German Benjamin Becker beat seventh seed Lu Yen-Hsun of Taiwan 6-4 6-3.
