Glenn Maxwell struck a blow with the bat and in the field, but it wasn't enough to lead Kings XI Punjab to a win over Kolkata Knight Riders.
Chasing a total of 3-164, a half-century from the Australian couldn't get Punjab over the line, and they finished Wednesday's Indian Premier League clash in Kolkata 9-157.
Before notching up 68 with the bat, Maxwell also had an impact in the field when he ended the innings of Gautam Gambhir on 54 with a run-out from a tough-angled direct hit.
Robin Uthappa (70) and Gambhir made a brutal start when the Knight Riders were sent in to bat, putting on a partnership of 101 before Gambhir was nabbed halfway down the pitch by Maxwell.
Punjab's first three batsmen, Murali Vijay (6), Marcus Stoinis (0) and Manan Vohra (0), fell quickly, before Wriddhiman Saha added 24 to the board.
However, it was Maxwell who put them back in the game with a knock that included four sixes and six fours, before he was caught lbw off Piyush Chawla after missing a reverse sweep.
Man-of-the-match Andre Russell pulled the rollercoaster match firmly back for the Knight Riders, adding to a pair of earlier wickets with two more in the final over.
