Maxwell selected in Aus T20 squad

Glenn Maxwell has been selected in Australia's Twenty20 squad, despite being dropped for the current one-day series in Sri Lanka.

Glenn Maxwell has earned an Australian recall, brought back into the fold for the upcoming two-match Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka.

Maxwell was a shock omission when the 15-man one-day squad was named last month but has held his place for the T20 fixtures at the end of the current ODI series.

Queenslander Chris Lynn has also been named, called back after missing March's World T20 despite dominating with the bat for the Brisbane Heat in last summer's BBL.

"Both Chris and Glenn are dynamic players who are both capable of winning a game from their own bat and they also bring that x-factor in the field," chairman of selectors Rod Marsh said from Colombo on Thursday (AEST).

However Test stars Usman Khawaja, Josh Hazlewood and Mitch Marsh are all missing from the squad that played in the World T20.

Australia crashed out in the group stages there and are desperate to improve their ranking of No.6 in the world.

Hazlewood averaged 64 with the ball in the Indian tournament, going for eight-an-over, while Marsh averaged 15 with the bat. Khawaja could consider himself far more unlucky given he was Australia's leading run-scorer before struggling through the current tour of Sri Lanka.

However it's the selection of Maxwell, who retains his spot after the doomed Indian campaign, which will attract the most interest.

Rod Marsh attacked the allrounder's consistency when dropping him from the one-day series and he has since struggled in matches with the Australia A side.

The 26-year-old has scored just 61 runs in five innings against South Africa A and the National Performance Squad, while he has taken three wickets at an average off 44.

However he averaged 27.25 in the World T20 at a strike rate of 129.7.

David Warner will captain the side with Steve Smith returning home to rest, while Peter Nevill reclaims his spot in the squad after Matthew Wade took the gloves for the one-day series.

"Peter is the incumbent wicket-keeper in the T20 side and had a very good World T20 for Australia," selector Marsh said.

"The panel wanted to keep that consistency heading into these two matches."

Also missing from that tournament are injured bowlers Nathan Coulter-Nile and Ashton Agar, while Shane Watson has retired and Andrew Tye was not selected.

AUSTRALIAN SQUAD FOR SRI LANKA T20s: David Warner (capt), Scott Boland, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, John Hastings, Travis Head, Moises Henriques, Chris Lynn, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Peter Nevill, Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa.
