Glenn Maxwell won bragging rights over Australian Test captain Steve Smith and his Rising Pune Supergiants when Kings XI Punjab chased down a modest total of 6-163 in the Indian Premier League.
Smith made 26 off 27 balls after his side lost the toss and were sent in to bat before record signing Ben Stokes top-scored with a half-century.
Stokes provided the mid-innings impetus with two fours and three sixes in a 30-ball 50 although he failed to kick on, returning a catch to slow left-armer Axar Patel after facing only two more deliveries.
Manoj Tiwary's 40 not out carried the defending champions, who defeated Mumbai Indians in their opener, to 163 but their total was overhauled by thanks to the efforts of Maxwell and David Miller (30 not out).
The Kings XI pair, renowned for their big-hitting, put on an unbroken 79-run stand after they had slipped to 4-85, with skipper Maxwell (44 off 20 balls) in a particularly destructive mood.
The Australian tilted the game in Kings XI's favour with back-to-back sixes off Imran Tahir and he carried his side over the line with an over to spare.
"Nice to start off with a new home ground and get some joy," Maxwell said.
"We haven't had fruitful seasons recently so it was nice. It was a clean slate for the team, we came with blank minds and had plans for all their batsmen.
"We practised well and got around 230 in one of the practice games, so it felt nice to restrict them to 163. It's better to chase here, to know how to pace it and keep wickets in the back end."
