Dumped Test batsman Glenn Maxwell hopes to continue to build his case for a recall when Victoria take on Western Australia in their one-day cup semi-final.

Maxwell will take the field for Victoria against WA at Junction Oval on Sunday - the same day Australia kick off their two-Test series against Pakistan in Dubai.

The 29-year-old's omission from that squad came as a shock to many, including former national coach Darren Lehmann and Test great Ricky Ponting.

In his first innings for Victoria after receiving the news, Maxwell bludgeoned 80 from 91 balls, but has failed to make more than 33 in four innings since.

His quest to pile on the runs required by new coach Justin Langer hasn't been helped by coming in at No.5, but Maxwell is content to play the role asked of him.

"I've been batting really well this tournament ... I feel really good about where my game is at," Maxwell told reporters on Saturday.

"I've adjusted a few things technically and mentally as well.

"Just playing my role in this side there haven't probably been as many opportunities to have those bigger scores but I feel like I've been batting as well as ever, which is nice."

Maxwell will travel to the United Arab Emirates as part of the Australian T20 squad to play a three-game series against Pakistan at the conclusion of the Test series.

That tour, and his expected inclusion in the ODI squad when South Africa tour in November, will mean he'll miss the start of the Sheffield Shield season.

Maxwell admits he'll be short of opportunities to impress at first-class level as he looks to muscle his way back into the Test side for the four-Test series against India over the Australian summer.

"It's something that's happened a lot throughout my career," he said.

"I think if you look at the number of Shield games I reckon I would've played the lowest out of a lot of players that I'm probably vying for a (Test) spot against.

"Whether or not that's hurt me or not? I'm not really sure.

"... (But) we've seen with (Aaron) Finch that with a weight of runs in any format you're a chance to get selected."

Victoria progressed to the semi-final after their qualifying final against NSW at Drummoyne Oval was washed out without a ball being bowled.

Western Australia booked their semi berth after finishing on top of the competition ladder, unbeaten after five matches.

The final will be held at Junction Oval on Wednesday.
