St Kilda key forward Paddy McCartin has signed a new deal which will tie him to the AFL team until the end of the 2020 season.

The 21-year-old put pen to paper on a two-year contract extension as the Saints aim to return to the finals with their young, talented, list.

McCartin, who has had to deal with concussion issues and been limited to just 22 AFL games since being drafted No.1 in 2014, is hopeful of helping St Kilda become a genuine contender.

"I love the club and I'm excited for what the future holds," he said.

"There is a great feeling among the group and we are really hungry to take the next step this season."

McCartin returned to full training last week after recovering from a minor foot sprain suffered in early December.

"Paddy has shown great character and resilience in the way he has confronted every challenge over the past three years," Saints recruiting and list manager Tony Elshaug said.

"His work on the training track in the latter stages of last season and throughout the pre-season has been first rate and we're excited by the player he can become in the coming years."
