Matthew McConaughey's signature cowboy hat from his Oscar-winning role in Dallas Buyers Club has sold at auction for almost $US13,000 ($A14,073.07).

The actor signed the white Resistol headpiece he wore as AIDS patient Ron Woodroof in the film and handed it over to Hollywood memorabilia site NateDSanders.com.

The hat, which also features McConaughey's famous Dazed and Confused catchphrase "Just keep living" under the brim, went up for auction online with a starting bid of $US3,000 and closed on Thursday at $US12,956.
