New Zealand are hoping skipper Brendon McCullum and experienced quick bowler Trent Boult will pass fitness tests to take the field in Tuesday's final one-day international against Sri Lanka.
New Zealand lead the series 2-1 after heavy wins in the first two matches but Sri Lanka bounced back to take the third easily.
The fourth match in Nelson was rained off and Sri Lanka now have the opportunity to draw the series if they can win in Mt Maunganui on Tuesday.
Black Caps batting coach Craig McMillan says it will be disappointing for New Zealand if Sri Lanka, well beaten in the two Tests, salvage a series draw in the ODIs.
"It's a one-off effectively, it's like a final and I know our guys are pretty determined to make sure the series finishes as it should."
McCullum, who retires from international cricket in February, aggravated a disc injury by diving into an advertising hoarding when spectacularly cutting off a boundary in the second game.
McMillan said the captain wasn't fit to play in both Nelson matches but he had improved.
"His back is getting gradually better but it needs to be pretty close to 100 per cent. There's still a lot of cricket to go this summer. So we don't want to risk him over one match."
Both McCullum and left-arm seamer Boult will have to pass fitness tests on Monday and then on the morning of the match, McMillan said.
Boult has been named in the squad after being rested for the first four ODIs.
"The break's done him well. We'll need to see how he goes at training tomorrow (Monday) before we make a final decision whether he plays," McMillan said.
