McEvoy beats Missile at NSW swim titles

Cameron McEvoy has upstaged Olympic silver medallist James Magnussen to win the 100m freestyle title at the NSW swimming championships.

Cameron McEvoy has upstaged reigning world champion James Magnussen to win the 100m freestyle title at the NSW swimming championships.

With just over a month until the Olympic trials, McEvoy hit the wall in a time of 48.40sec at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre on Friday night ahead of Adelaide teenager Kyle Chalmers (48.68s).

Magnussen, who claimed silver in the same event at the London Olympics, was third in 49.22 in a red-hot entree to next month's sprint showdown for a berth at the Rio Games.

"I'm really happy," McEvoy said.

"I wasn't too fresh for the competition. I'm in a different phase of my training and that phase revolves around a lot of quality race work. I'm pleased to have come out and got under 49 seconds."

The women's 100m freestyle title belonged to Cate Campbell in a time of 52.85, with sister Bronte withdrawing from the morning's heats because of a head cold.

Edging close to her best time was Emma McKeon who touched for second in 53.48 and Michelle Coleman was third in 54.03.

Campbell's time was only 0.03sec slower than the time she swam to take bronze at last year's world championships.

"That was probably my fastest swim without taper so I'm pleased with that," Campbell said.

In the opening event of the night, the men's 400m freestyle, David McKeon scored an emphatic victory in 3:46.48 in front of Mack Horton (3:49.94).

In the absence of world champion Emily Seebohm due to illness, Madison Wilson took the honours in the women's 200m backstroke final in a time of 2:08.28.

Fifteen-year-old Minna Atherton grabbed silver in 2:08.90 with veteran Belinda Hocking third in 2:09.48.

Georgia Bohl came within a whisker of her personal best in the 100m breaststroke, swimming 1:06.65 to win gold ahead of Denmark's Rikke Pedersen and Sweden's Jennie Johansson.

Jessica Ashwood swam 8:19.59 in the women's 800m freestyle, just over a second outside her Australian record time.
