Former Australian of the Year Professor Patrick McGorry wants a national vote on same-sex marriage to be dumped, warning of the harm it could do to gay and lesbian Australians.

Ahead of a meeting with Labor leader Bill Shorten over the proposed plebiscite on Tuesday, the mental health advocate has told Fairfax Media many people are already vulnerable and "there's definitely risk involved".

Peak body Mental Health Australia also wants parliament to hold a free vote on marriage equality instead.
