McGowan backs COAG terror measures

West Australian Premier Mark McGowan has thrown his support behind key terror issues to be discussed at the Council of Australian Governments meeting.

The WA premier is backing a federal government push for a national database of driver's licences and will discuss with the prime minister whether his state should extend the time a terror suspect can be held without charge.

The Commonwealth wants to expand its national database to include photos from driver's licences and other identification for its facial recognition system, and will discuss the issue at the Council of Australian Governments meeting on Thursday.

WA Premier Mark McGowan said his government supported initiatives being taken on a national level.

"We want to make that sure we protect West Australians and provide the best security measures for our police and security services to ensure that we prevent terrorism in our state," he told reporters in Canberra on Wednesday.

NSW is the only state with the power to detain a person for questioning for up to 14 days, while most states allow a maximum of seven.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull wants nationally consistent pre-charge detention laws, but needs to get around some constitutional hurdles.

Mr McGowan said he would discuss with the prime minister whether WA needed to have "matching arrangements" to NSW, and said he would also consult police.

"If it's in the interests of security and protecting our people then that's what we'll do," he said.

"I personally don't have a great concern about civil liberties when it comes to issues dealing with terrorists."

Mr McGowan will also use the COAG meeting as an opportunity to again discuss the GST revenue carve-up.
