McGuire thought injury had wrecked Origin

When a furious Josh McGuire stormed from the field after hurting his calf in an NRL match, he assumed a spot in Queensland's State of Origin team had gone.

Josh McGuire's poker face definitely needs some work.

The Queensland back rower couldn't hide his anguish when he hurt his calf during North Queensland's NRL round eight clash with Gold Coast in Townsville.

McGuire roared at anyone in his general vicinity - including a team trainer - ripping strapping tape from his head and wrists as he stormed off the field and headed straight to the dressing room.

The 29-year-old thought his chance to play in next Wednesday's State of Origin opener had gone and admits emotion got the better of him.

"I love playing for Queensland and I thought that might be in doubt," McGuire told AAP.

"I was cranky. I was filthy about it.

"I want to be here and I want to be a part of this with the boys. At that moment I thought that I'd put that in jeopardy."

As it turned out McGuire's injury wasn't as serious as he feared and he made a successful return in the Cowboys' 22-16 win over Canberra last Saturday.

That match ensured he was in the No.13 spot when Maroons coach Kevin Walters revealed his team to take on NSW on Sunday.

McGuire played 64 minutes off the bench against the Raiders and says the rage of a few weeks ago has since passed into joy as he prepares for his 12th Origin appearance.

"It was just good to get some good minutes out especially against a quality team like Canberra," he said.

"I was very excited to get through the game and feel good.

"Now just ramp it up and then relax into the game."
