World No.3 Rory McIlroy has made a second charge up the leaderboard in as many days at the World Golf Championship in Mexico City.
The 27-year-old McIlroy has climbed to seven-under-par midway through Friday's (Saturday AEDT) second round after picking up four birdies in his opening nine holes.
In his first tournament since injuring his rib in early January, the Northern Irishman is playing the back nine and is in a tie for second, one shot back of leader Ross Fisher, of England.
Meanwhile, defending champion Adam Scott has plummeted out of contention, dropping to a six-over total through 15 holes.
At one under, Marcus Fraser is the leading Australian on day two, while Sam Brazel is two over for the tournament.
Scott Hend is struggling at six over and is tied with compatriot and world No.7 Scott.
Victoria's Matthew Griffin is near last place with his 10-over total.
The WGC Mexico is a 77-man event with no cut. It features 49 of the world's best golfers, with only the No.2-ranked Jason Day absent, due to an ear infection.
