St George Illawarra hooker Cameron McInnes has told critics to lay off their new-look spine, insisting their attack will be exciting once it clicks.

Dragons coach Paul McGregor's scrumbase combination has been questioned after they suffered back-to-back defeats to open the season.

Skipper Gareth Widdop has been shifted to fullback to accommodate off-season recruit Corey Norman, with Matt Dufty relegated to a utility role.

While the results may suggest otherwise, McInnes believes there is enough evidence to persist with their current line-up.

"When you have two international players (in Widdop and Ben Hunt) and Corey Norman, who could easily be one himself, it'll work itself out," McInnes told AAP.

"We've just got to used to each other a bit more, which will happen.

"Once it clicks, it'd be pretty exciting."

In both their defeats so far, McGregor has opted for a mid-game spinal surgery that involves Widdop moving back into the halves, Dufty to fullback, Hunt to hooker, while McInnes plays lock to fill in for the banned Jack de Belin as well as the injured Tyson Frizell.

"I love playing 80 minutes at hooker but, if that's what the coaches need me to do, I'll do whatever the team needs," McInnes said.

"(Against South Sydney last week) I had 10 minutes at the back end there at lock. We'd all love to play 80, but that's the coach's decision."

McInnes also suggested there are positives to playing Hunt at hooker, where he has represented Queensland in State of Origin, as well as the Kangaroos.

"He's just so crafty with the ball," McInnes said.

"He's a bit different to me, I'm a bit more direct with my running and defence.

"He's a bit more crafty. He brings that element to the side."

"If the coaching staff think during the game that maybe getting him to hooker will help things out, and me to lock, I'll get through my work and things like that."
