Three women will form part of NSW Labor's leadership team for the first time in the party's history with newly-elected leader Jodi McKay announcing several key appointments ahead of a full cabinet reshuffle.

Ms McKay on Tuesday named Swansea MP Yasmin Catley as her deputy with the appointment marking the first time a regional MP has held the position since the 1960s.

Adam Searle will continue as leader of the opposition in the NSW upper house while Penny Sharpe will become deputy leader in the Legislative Council.

"This is the first time in the history of the Labor Party that we've had three women in our leadership team," Ms McKay said on Tuesday.

"That is significant. However, they are here on merit, and I think that's important for me to say."

Ms McKay announced on Monday that Walt Secord had been appointed shadow treasurer, switching roles with Ryan Park who takes on Mr Secord's old portfolio of health.

Mr Secord has been elevated despite backing Chris Minns who challenged Ms McKay for the NSW Labor leadership after the March election loss. He retains the arts portfolio.

Mr Park, who backed Ms McKay, becomes Labor's leader of the Legislative Assembly, as well as opposition spokesman for housing and homelessness.

"It just so happened that Ryan and Walt wanted each other's portfolios," Ms McKay said on Tuesday.

The new opposition leader is taking on the multiculturalism portfolio herself.

The rest of the shadow cabinet will be announced on Wednesday and Ms McKay says there will be "a good smattering of women" along with new portfolios including Ms Catley's rural and regional jobs, a focus on the gig economy and, as previously announced, housing and homelessness.

Former Labor leader Michael Daley has declined the opportunity to take a shadow cabinet position as he wanted to spend some more time on the backbench, Ms McKay said.

She emphatically won the leadership ballot against Mr Minns on Saturday securing 29 votes to 21 in the caucus and gaining 63 per cent of 10,822 rank-and-file ballots.
