Sydney veteran Jarrad McVeigh has signed a one-year AFL contract extension, ending speculation he might end his playing career elsewhere.

The Swans also announced on Tuesday night that once he retired, McVeigh would take on a coaching role at the club.

McVeigh, 32, is two games shy of his 300 milestone and next season most likely will be his last.

The new deal means the former Swans' captain will end his playing career as a one-club player.

McVeigh is a two-time club best and fairest, made the 2013 All-Australian team and played in Sydney's 2012 premiership-winning side.

He has played every game since round 15 after only managing two matches earlier in the season because of injury.

"It's exciting to have another year as a Sydney Swans player ahead of me, but also to be able to continue working with the younger players coming through," McVeigh said in a club statement.

"We've got some really exciting young talent and they're only going to get better - I'm rapt to have the opportunity to continue helping them along the way."
