Australian captain Meg Lanning has signed with Perth Scorchers for the next three editions of the Women's Big Bash League.

Widely considered the world's best batter, Lanning will play with the Scorchers until the end of the 2019-20 season in a major coup for the franchise.

The 25-year-old shifts from the Melbourne Stars, where she was the leading run scorer in the first two WBBL seasons as captain.

The national skipper is unlikely to feature in the upcoming season due to a shoulder injury, which will also rule her out of the Ashes.

"The Perth Scorchers are a great club with a strong core of experienced and up-and-coming players, so it's a really exciting opportunity for me to join the group," Lanning said.

"They made the semi-final in WBBL|01, then the Scorchers' hosted the final last season, so they're definitely a team on the rise, with a bright future ahead."
