Melania Trump has revealed that the controversial jacket she wore, emblazoned with the words "I really don't care. Do U?", was a message to her critics.

In June the US First Lady raised eyebrows when she visited an immigrant children's shelter in Texas wearing a khaki green military-style jacket with the words "I really don't care, do u?" on the back.

Initially, her spokeswoman tweeted that the media were reading too much into the jacket and claimed too much "time and energy" was being spent on speculation rather than Mrs Trump's visit to the children.

But in an interview with US media outlet ABC News that was aired on Sunday night, Mrs Trump said the jacket was a message to the left-wing media who were criticising her.

She said she wore the jacket "for the people and for the left-wing media who are criticising me. And I want to show them that I don't care."

At the time when Mrs Trump wore the jacket, US President Donald Trump tweeted it was a message to the "fake news media".

"'I REALLY DON’T CARE, DO U?' written on the back of Melania’s jacket, refers to the Fake News Media. Melania has learned how dishonest they are, and she truly no longer cares!" he wrote.

During the same interview, when asked why she chose cyberbullying as a pet cause, Donald Trump's wife had a surprising answer.

"I could say I'm the most bullied person in the world," Mrs Trump said in the interview that took place during her trip this month to Africa.

When pressed, the US First Lady said that she could certainly be "one of them, if you really see what people saying about me."
