A Melbourne skyscraper will be the tallest building in the central business district when it reaches 298m but it's one of several aiming to dominate the city's skyline.

The 88-storey Aurora Melbourne Central tower on La Trobe Street will be the largest building in the CBD when it "tops out" on Thursday.

"Melbourne is renowned for our stunning city skyline and we now have an exciting new addition with Aurora Melbourne Central," the city's Lord Mayor Sally Capp said.

It towers over the CBD's current tallest tower, The Rialto on Collins Street, which is 270m high.

The mixed-use building will feature apartments, serviced apartments, offices and retail space.

But while it may be the tallest building in the CBD, on the opposite bank of the Yarra River others are aiming higher.

Southbank is set to be home to Australia's tallest building at 356.2m.

The Green Spine building will feature two towers with a twisting geometric glass facade and vertical green spaces, on a $2 billion-plus development site

Currently, Australia's tallest building is Q1 on the Gold Coast, which is 322.5m high, followed by Melbourne's Eureka tower at 297.3 metres.

But this will be pipped by Victoria's Australia 108 building, which once complete, will soar 317m tall.
