One of the enduring mysteries of the Melbourne gangland war could be close to resolution with a man charged over the 2003 murder Graham "The Munster" Kinniburgh.

Kinniburgh was ambushed and shot dead outside his house in Kew, in the city's inner east, in December 2003.

Stephen John Asling was arrested in Anakie, near Geelong, and charged with one count of murder.

The 55-year-old faced court on Wednesday and will reappear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on January 27.

"The charges are the culmination of an extensive, protracted and complex investigation," Victoria Police said in a brief statement.

They would not comment further.

Notorious gangland figures Carl Williams and Andrew Veniamin, both victims of the war, were suspects in the killing.

A coroner found Kinniburgh and Jason Moran were implicated in the death of Alphonse Gangitano, who was shot in Templestowe in 1998.

Dozens more people were killed in Melbourne's gangland war, which stretched until Williams was killed in jail in 2010.

Task Force Purana was set up to investigate the deaths and their gangland links.
