A Melbourne man has faced court charged with murdering his mother.

Socrates Tamvakis, 44, made a brief appearance before Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with murdering 74-year-old Violet Tamvakis.

His lawyer did not apply for bail and the matter was adjourned to May 2 for a filing hearing.

The court was told Tamvakis would need medication for depression while in custody.

Tamvakis has been in police custody since he was arrested on Wednesday, a day after one of his sisters found their mother in a front room of her Bentleigh home, the victim of a violent assault.
