A 10-year-old Melbourne boy has died in hospital after being struck by a van in the city's east.

A 10-year-old boy has died in hospital days after being hit by a van in Melbourne.

He was taken off life support on Tuesday after being struck while crossing Springfield Road at Blackburn North on Saturday night with two friends, police said.

A 45-year-old man behind the wheel was arrested at the scene before being released pending further inquiries.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

The young boy was the fourth person to die on Tuesday following a spate of car crashes in the state.

A 36-year-old man ran off the road and down an embankment at Selwyn, near Mt Hotham, on Tuesday night, hours after a 19-year-old man hit a tree at Nar Nar Goon, in the Gippsland region.

Earlier, a 93-year-old man and woman, 86, died after a two-car crash near Foster, in South Gippsland.
