A 10-year-old boy has died in hospital days after being hit by a van in Melbourne.

He was taken off life support on Tuesday after being struck while crossing Springfield Road at Blackburn North on Saturday night with two friends, police said.

A 45-year-old man behind the wheel was arrested at the scene before being released pending further inquiries.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Earlier, a 93-year-old man and woman, 86, died after a two-car crash near Foster, in South Gippsland.
