Melbourne church service for Nice, Turkey

The French and Turkish consul-generals will be at a Melbourne church service to honour those killed and traumatised by events in Nice, Istanbul and Ankara.

Leaders of Melbourne's French and Turkish communities will take part in an Anglican service to honour those killed and affected by the weekend's violence.

The Honorary Consul-General of France, Myriam Boisbouvier-Wylie, and the Consul-General of the Republic of Turkey, Mehmet Kucuksakalli, will light candles at a service at St Paul's Cathedral on Thursday.

Readings during the service will be done by a French exchange student from Trinity Grammar School and Danile Kemp, the counsellor for the Assembly of French Citizens Abroad.

The service will be led by St Paul's Dean, Andreas Loewe, and a sermon will be preached by Melbourne priest Canon Ken Letts, who was rector of Nice for 20 year.

"We will pray for healing for those who were injured or traumatised by acts of terror and conflict, and to commend those who died into God's eternal care," Dr Loewe said.

Attacker Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel killed 84 people and wounded many more when he drove a truck through a crowd celebrating Bastille Day in Nice.

Violence shook Turkey's two main cities on Friday night during a failed military coup.

The service will be at St Paul's, on the corner of Swanston and Flinders Streets, at 5.10pm on Thursday.
