Melbourne landmarks light up for Paris

Several Melbourne landmarks will be lit up in the colours of the French flag, as buildings around the world hold vigils after attacks in Paris.

Some of Victoria's most iconic buildings will be lit up in red, white and blue in solidarity with France following the Paris terror attacks.

The Arts Centre's spire and the National Gallery of Victoria - both on St Kilda Road - and the MCG will be illuminated in the colours of the French flag on Saturday night.

Security has been increased across Melbourne's public transport network and at a major fun run and the UFC fight at Etihad Stadium on Sunday to help ensure community calm.

"At this stage, as I understand, there are no plans to increase the terrorism threat levels for the Australian community," Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton told reporters on Saturday.

"Victorians should be confident to go about their weekend activity as they normally would."

Mr Ashton said he had talks with the AFP and ASIO on Saturday and intelligence had not indicated any new threat to Australia.

People should be vigilant and report to authorities anything that does not "feel right", he said.

The police chief has condemned the Paris attacks.

"These are cowardly attacks, co-ordinated attacks and cowardly attacks," Mr Ashton said.

"The work of cowards to have caused so much carnage."
