A man remains under police guard in a Melbourne hospital after he was shot by police trying to subdue a violent domestic dispute yesterday.

A good samaritan in his 60s was stabbed during the dispute while trying to help a woman involved in the domestic incident in Melbourne's northwest.

Both men, the knifing victim in his 60s who was stabbed several times and his assailant in his 20s shot several times, were admitted to Royal Melbourne Hospital yesterday afternoon.

A police spokeswoman says the offender remained under police guard and has yet to be interviewed.
