Melbourne records wet day after hot spell

Hot and sticky Melbourne weather has preceded the wettest January day in 14 years, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

Melbourne has lived up to its four-seasons-in-one-day reputation with sweltering hot and humid conditions shifting to the wettest January day in more than a decade.

After temperatures dropped about 10C late on Monday, Melbourne recorded 38.8mm of rain across 24 hours; the city's biggest January deluge since 2004.

The substantial showers made up more than 80 per cent of Melbourne's total rainfall for the month, but the outer northwest suburb of Sunbury received almost double the dose at 73mm.
