Melbourne recycling fire costs firms $200k

Businesses affected by a Melbourne recycling plant fire have reported losses of more than $200,000, according to their lawyer.

A fire at a Melbourne recycling plant cost nearby businesses more than $200,000 as some had to close and others suffered property damage and were forced to clean up, a lawyer says.

About 180 residents and businesses have signed up to a class action by Maddens Lawyers against SKM, the operators of a Coolaroo recycling plant that burned for days in July.

The claim alleges SKM was negligent because it knew there was a fire risk and should have done more to protect the nearby Coolaroo and Dallas neighbourhoods.
