A man is in intensive care in a Melbourne hospital after being stabbed outside a party.

The Berwick man, 24, was stabbed during an altercation with two men on a Noble Park street before he was able to contact friends and get a lift to Dandenong hospital about 5am on Saturday, police say.

The man presented with life-threatening stab wounds but has since had surgery and is now in a stable condition, a Monash Health spokeswoman said.

The victim had attended a party near where he was stabbed, police say.
