Melbourne terrorist siege - what we know

Victoria Police raid the Melbourne home of terrorist Yacqub Khayre following Monday's deadly siege in Brighton.

THE MELBOURNE TERRORIST SIEGE - WHAT WE KNOW

THE INCIDENT

* Police first respond to reports of explosion at 4pm on Monday at Buckingham Serviced Apartments in Brighton

* Apartment employee found dead in building foyer while a prostitute is held hostage

* Gunman - 29-year-old Roxburgh Park man Yacqub Khayre - cuts off his GPS bracelet some time after the hostage situation begins

* The Seven Network Melbourne newsroom receives a call from a woman who says she's a hostage before Khayre says, "This is for IS, this is for al-Qaeda"

* The terrorist bursts out of the apartment at about 6pm, firing at and injuring three officers before being shot dead by police

* Prostitute rescued, unharmed

* Two hours later, Deputy Police Commissioner Andrew Crisp says the siege is being treated as a terrorist incident

THE GUNMAN

* Yacqub Khayre came to Australian as young child with his grandparents, who are believed to have been Somali refugees

* Islamic State has claimed him as one of their "fighters"

* Khayre, who has an extensive criminal history, was acquitted of the 2009 Holsworthy army barracks terror plot

* During his 2010 trial on the terror plot, prosecutors alleged Khayre travelled to Somalia to seek approval for the barracks attack. His defence counsel submitted he went to train for the civil conflict.

* He was convicted of violent armed burglary in 2012 and released on parole in December last year

* The incident is being treated as terrorism but police don't think it was part of a wider plot

* Officers continue to search Khayre's house, where he lived with his mother

THE VICTIMS

* A 36-year-old Australian-born Chinese receptionist for the serviced apartments. He had recently married and has a child.

* A 36-year-old prostitute and Columbian national. Khayre had arranged to meet with her in one of the apartments. Police say she was tied up for "some time" but was rescued unharmed.

* Three police wounded in gun battle, two hospitalised. One officer underwent surgery for a serious hand injury and another will need an operation for face wounds.

WHAT'S BEING SAID

"How was this man on parole? He had a long record of violence" - Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull

"Of course it is a concern to all of us that somebody compliant with each and every condition of parole could commit such a crime." - Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews

"We know Islamic State have jumped in and claimed responsibility but we know they do that at the drop of a hat. There is nothing of itself indicating anything was planned." - Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Graham Ashton
