A group of Indian retailers in Melbourne's east claim their businesses are being destroyed by an encroaching commercial development managed by the State Government.

The Victorian opposition claims the dispute will have far-reaching ramifications, as the strip known as "Little India" fights for survival.

The cluster of specialty Indian businesses comprises 37 traders whose premises have been compulsorily acquired and remaining lease terms vary.

The precinct is being developed as part of the Victoria Government-backed $290 million "Revitalising Central Dandenong" initiative.

The state opposition says the Baillieu government has failed in dealing appropriately with the multicultural minority and the ramifications of the move.

But Victoria's Planning Minister Matthew Guy says tens of thousands of dollars have been spent upgrading car parking and signage in the area and attempts to negotiate an acceptable outcome will continue.
