Chinese artist Ai Weiwei is asking Melburnians to dig through their toy boxes and donate any spare Lego in the name of freedom of speech.

Lego has refused to fill an order of the toy blocks for the artist saying they did not want them used in politically motivated art.

But since the company's response, thousands of people around the world have offered their Lego for use in his art project.

"In response to Lego's refusal and the overwhelming public response, Ai Weiwei has now decided to make a new work to defend freedom of speech and political art," Ai Weiwei posted on Instagram on Monday.
Melbourne donors can drop Lego blocks through the sunroof of a car parked in the National Gallery of Victoria sculpture garden from October 29, ahead of an Ai Weiwei exhibition starting on December 11.
