A memorial has been held outside the Villawood Detention Centre for killed detainee Josefa Rulani.

Advocates and friends say the 36 year-old Fijian man killed himself upon hearing the news that Australian authorities were to send him back to Fiji.

SBS Reporter Marion Ives said around forty people gathered for the service, which they had originally planned to hold inside the centre.

Security initially refused the group access, but after a change of location was cited - a church - it was decided the service should be held in the grounds of the detention centre.

The group sang hymns and prayers, with family members including Josefa's nephew Eddie and younger brother Meli embraced by other members of the group.
