A Melbourne flight school will hold a memorial service for a Chinese trainee pilot who died following a light plane crash in a suburban paddock.

Nicholas Cheung, 19, died after the ultralight Bristell two-seater plane crashed into a paddock at Clyde North during a training flight on Thursday.

His 25-year-old Victorian instructor with Learn to Fly Melbourne remained in hospital in a serious but stable condition on Sunday night.

The flight school said it was working with Mr Cheung's family, who have flown in from Hong Kong, following the "terrible tragedy".

"We have been deeply affected and saddened by the tragic death of Nicolas Cheung on Friday, in particular the impact of this incident on his family," Learn to Fly said on Facebook.

"Nicolas and a flying instructor were undertaking a dual training flight when the aircraft crashed into a paddock."

The Moorabbin-based school said it would hold a public memorial service for Mr Cheung but could not confirm a date.

The school was also co-operating with Recreational Aviation Australia investigators to determine what caused the cause but said weather was unlikely to be a factor.
